Joni Johnson-Godsy grew up in a small town in Ohio.
Her love of animals started from her first memories as a child and was a passion that grew
even stronger over time. In her youth she spent countless hours
exploring the creeks and woods near her family’s home learning
about nature. She developed a passionate connection to the wild world, which keeps
her centered to this day.
Joni’s life changed dramatically the day she acquired her first dog after completing college. She had not been allowed to have pets growing up so she made up for lost time as she enjoyed training her spirited new Sheltie puppy. Before long she and her talented Sheltie were competing in and often winning their classes at obedience trials hosted by the AKC (American Kennel Club). Joni became very involved in the world of dog training, teaching obedience classes, competing with her own dogs and learning new facets of training such as conformation, agility and tracking (ground scent work). It was at an AKC tracking test that Joni met her husband Alan who also shares her passion for animals and nature.

For a number of years Joni created many works of art based on her love of dogs. Her work won awards at numerous national art competitions and drew the attention of the AKC who hired her to illustrate dogs for their magazine, the AKC Gazette. These images were used as breed standards to accompany many of the magazine’s articles. Joni’s interest in conformation (correct structure) of animals has aided her art work. She currently is a dog portrait photographer, photographing a variety of show dogs, many for kennel advertisements. Her dog portrait photography can be found on www.godsy.com
Joni has created illustrations for Hallmark Cards for nineteen years, having her work published and sold on Hallmark product in North America and Europe. Three years ago she decided that it was time to dedicate more time to her passion for art and nature. She is currently a part time employee at Hallmark, dividing her time between two very different artistic disciplines.
In June of 2001 Joni was selected to attend a juried workshop in Montana given by Robert Bateman. She has also had the privilege of studying under wildlife artist Jan Martin McGuire, who has encouraged her to share her work with the public. It is a new adventure which she embraces with enthusiasm.
Joni is a member of the Society of Animal Artists.
Through her paintings Joni hopes to generate enthusiasm and passion for nature in others:
